Significant breakthroughs have been made in the independent development of major technological equipment in the energy sector.


Abstract

On August 16, the first major technological equipment project in the energy sector independently developed by Dongfang Electric Group—the 300MW variable-speed pumped storage unit's generator motor rotor—successfully passed the flyaway test. The dynamic stability and reliability of the rotor were fully verified, marking a breakthrough in the independent development of variable-speed pumped storage units in China.

On August 16, the first major technical equipment project in the energy field independently developed by Dongfang Electric Group—the 300MW variable speed pumped storage unit's generator motor rotor successfully passed the fly test. The dynamic stability, reliability, and other performance of the rotor were fully verified, marking a breakthrough in the independent development of variable speed pumped storage units in China.

The rotor of the variable speed pumped storage unit's generator motor has high requirements for dynamic stability and reliability, making it the core component of the unit and one of the most challenging 'hard nuts to crack' in technological research. In 2021, the National Energy Administration included '300MW variable speed pumped storage unit complete equipment' in the list of major technical equipment (projects) in the energy field. In 2022, the China Association for Science and Technology included 'how to develop large variable speed pumped storage units' in the 'top ten industrial technology issues.'

Dongfang Electric Group, which undertook the independent development task, innovatively adopted an end-to-end integral protective ring fixed structure, applied a new rotor winding connection method, and developed an ultra-large diameter non-magnetic metal protective ring. They overcame challenges in design development, process manufacturing, and assembly installation of high-speed large-sized wound rotors, ensuring the stability and reliability of the entire rotor system.

The operating speed of the variable speed pumped storage unit can be adjusted within a certain range, featuring flexibility in operation, stability and reliability, and rapid response, making it suitable for the needs of constructing new power systems. Dongfang Electric Group tackled key technical challenges such as hydraulic development of pumps and turbines for variable speed pumped storage units, transitional processes of units, electromagnetic design of variable speed motors, high-power AC collection systems, and coordinated control of electromechanical grid power, achieving a series of important results for pumped storage units. These results will be applied to the first major technical equipment project in the energy field by the National Energy Administration—the '300MW variable speed pumped storage unit complete equipment' relying on projects—Shandong Tai'an Phase II and Guangdong Zhaoqing Langjiang pumped storage power station.
