With the increasing proportion of new energy generation, the demand for new energy storage in power system is becoming more and more intense. Among the energy storage facilities, the most widely used, mature and economical one is the pumped storage power station, but it has high requirements for geographical conditions, long construction period and difficult to flexibly layout. The new energy storage construction period is short, the site selection is simple and flexible, and the adjustment ability is strong, which is complementary to the advantages of pumped storage.

 

Experts said that the new energy storage is a key part of the construction of a new energy system. With the rapid growth of the installed scale of new energy storage, its role in promoting the development and consumption of new energy and the safe and stable operation of power systems has gradually emerged. Pan Wenhu, director of the power dispatch control center of the State Grid Wuhu Power Supply Company, said: "In recent years, the construction of energy storage power stations in Wuhu, Anhui Province has been accelerating, with 13 new energy storage power stations in Wuhu City last year, with a grid-connected capacity of 227300 kilowatts. In February this year, Wuhu City, all kinds of energy storage power stations participated in more than 50 batches of regional power grid peak regulation, and new energy consumption of about 6.5 million kWh, which played an important role."

 

Experts said that the "14th Five-Year Plan" period is an important period of strategic opportunities for the development of new energy storage. my country has reached the world's leading level in technologies such as lithium-ion batteries and compressed air energy storage. Facing the world's energy technology competition, it supports green and low-carbon technological innovation and accelerates the construction of a new energy storage technology innovation system.

Focus on green low-carbon transformation

2022At the beginning of the year, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration jointly issued the "14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of New Energy Storage", clarifying that by 2025, the new energy storage will enter the stage of large-scale development from the initial stage of commercialization, with large-scale commercial application conditions.

Under the favorable policy, the diversified high-quality development of new energy storage has achieved remarkable results. "New energy storage has increasingly become a key technology for my country to build a new energy system and a new power system, an important direction for cultivating emerging industries, and an important starting point for promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of energy production and consumption." Bian Guangqi, deputy director of the Department of Energy Conservation and Science and Technology Equipment of the National Energy Administration, said.

By the end of last year, the cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage projects nationwide had reached 31.39 million kW/66.87 million kWh, with an average energy storage duration of 2.1 hours. From the perspective of investment scale, since the "14th Five-Year Plan", new energy storage installations have directly promoted economic investment of more than 100 billion yuan, further expanding the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain, and becoming a new driving force for my country's economic development.

New energy storage installations are growing at the same time as new technologies are emerging. Since last year, a number of 300 MW grade compressed air energy storage projects, 100 MW grade flow battery energy storage projects, megawatt grade flywheel energy storage projects started construction, gravity energy storage, liquid air energy storage, carbon dioxide energy storage and other new technologies on the ground implementation, the overall trend of diversified development. By the end of 2023, lithium-ion battery energy storage accounted for 97.4 percent, lead-carbon battery energy storage accounted for 0.5 percent, compressed air energy storage accounted for 0.5 percent, flow battery energy storage accounted for 0.4 percent, and other new energy storage technologies accounted for 1.2 percent.

At the same time, we focus on the large-scale safe and efficient application of electrochemical energy storage, and take the lead in carrying out the key technology and equipment research of gravity energy storage, and actively promote the construction of Zhangjiakou 300 megawatt-hour gravity energy storage demonstration project.

utilization efficiency to be improved

In order to meet the urgent demand of power system for regulation capacity, the installed capacity of new energy storage still needs to maintain rapid growth. As a strategic emerging industry, new energy storage is still in the initial stage of development, and there are some problems, such as low level of dispatching and utilization, security needs to be strengthened.

According to industry insiders, according to the requirements of local energy authorities, many new energy projects are equipped with energy storage power stations. However, due to insufficient capacity such as active support, unclear business model and imperfect management mechanism, the utilization rate is low.

In November last year, the National Energy Administration issued the ''Notice on Promoting the Grid-connected and Dispatching Application of New Energy Storage (Draft for Comment) '', which clarified the management methods, technical requirements, and organizational safeguards for the grid-connected and dispatching application of new energy storage. It is expected to improve the utilization level of new energy storage, guide the healthy development of the industry, and will have a positive impact on the development of energy storage in terms of power dispatch and market construction.
